Before She Became a Best-Selling Author, Marie Force Had to Overcome Rejection

As a young mom working from home with two kids and two dogs to take care of, Marie Force didn't have much free time for writing. But she did have an idea in the back of her head. That idea was that someday, she would write a book. The question was, when?

Well, the answer came more quickly than Marie might have expected, and her turning point involved both sadness and hope. Marie's mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2003, and "that was a wakeup call" according to Marie. Her mother had always been one of Marie's biggest cheerleaders, and the young mother realized that she wanted to publish a book that her mom could read.

"It sort of wakes you up to... if not now, when?" Marie recalls.

So Marie got to work. And she brought the first four chapters of her first novel, "Treading Water," to her mother just a week or two before she passed on. And while Marie was very glad that her mom had gotten to read her work and see that Marie was pursuing her dream, there was a long road ahead of her in the quest to become a successful author.

It took Marie 6 years to get "Treading Water" published. She received rejection after rejection, until there were more papers than she could hold in both hands, as she says. But she never stopped writing—and once her work reached readers, she was off to the races.

Marie recalls that the first book in one of her series, The McCarthys of Gansett Island, was rejected multiple times. That series has now sold more than 2.2 million e-books.

Here's what Marie has to say about overcoming rejection and self-doubt: "If you have a belief in yourself and your dream and the thing you want to do and be, it's really important to not give up."
