At This All-Autistic Wedding, Inclusion And Love Are Guests Of Honor
Weddings have a way of bringing joy to everyone they touch: brides, grooms, and their families of course, but also those who help to plan and participate in the event. Emotions rush in. There's electricity in the air. And love is always the guest of honor.
What makes Anita and Abraham's wedding so very special is the specific group of people they chose to help plan and participate. Both bride Anita and groom Abraham live with Asperger's (they actually met at an Asperger's group), and while their conditions posed challenges at the start of their relationship, their love persisted through everything! The couple decided to honor their experiences by holding their wedding at Love & Autism: A Conference with Heart, and inviting people living with Autism to lead as many parts of the celebration as possible.
"We felt like this is a wonderful idea, not only to get married but also to send a message and provide people with Autism with hope that they will someday find true love like we have true love," says Abraham.
Anita and Abraham knew that their wedding would showcase lots of wonderful role models living with Autism for younger people attending the conference. The person who delivered the toast (Temple Grandin), the Officiant (Dr. Stephen Shore), the videographer (Inclusion Films), the flower girls and ring bearers, musicians and more participants in the wedding are all living on the Autism spectrum. Listening to them in this video shows you what a wide variety of experiences these folks have.
"We wanted the people to see this, to feel it. That will lead to many, many more open doors for people on the Autism spectrum," Anita says.

Art classes allow young people to express themselves in important ways. Unfortunately, arts education is disappearing from schools in America; since 2008, 80% of school districts have cut funding for art programs. Simultaneously, student creativity scores have dropped. Fortunately, there are people and groups out there fighting to keep arts education present and vibrant in schools across the country.
Tennis is a popular and fun pastime, in that it requires mental focus and athletic ability. But due to the cost of equipment and court time, lots of kids never get the chance to try their hand at the sport. Leaders of the Junior Tennis Champion Center (JTCC) recognized this cost challenge, and decided to do something to change it. In 2009, JTCC launched a Community Outreach initiative, with the goal of introducing underserved kids in Prince George's County, MD, and Washington, DC to tennis. And the program has become an indisputable success.
